Midterm questions

English 339—Winter 2005

The Midterm will be a single essay question of about 500 words, which you have the whole class period to write. You may bring your texts to class. Please write in a bluebook, and indicate on the cover whether you would like this essay to be counted for the GWR.

On the exam you will be give three of the following five topics out of which you will select one:

Compare and contrast in Henry V and Othello:

1. depictions of relations between the sexes
2. similarities and differences between history and tragedy
3. the values and psychology of the soldier—aspects of military identity
4. the power of dissimulation: hiding, masquerading, spying
5. the power of language: persuasion, manipulation and control
