Class critical reading exercise on Mary Austin

Get together with two people to analyze one of the ten numbered paragraphs or paragraph pairs.

 

Here are some things to look for:

 

  1. beginning, middle and end--climax
  2. central impression and point
  3. transitions from previous and to next paragraph
  4. relation to chapter title and to first paragraph
  5. emotional buildup or contrast
  6. interesting uses of language

  1. factual observations and causal explanations
  2. relation of illustration to text
