Focus the Nation San Luis Obispo--January 31 2008

Student Essays for English 149: Technical Writing for Engineers

Rachel Duchak, Instructor

Prompt:

Produce and submit in class a memo addressing the following points:

1.  Summarize a Focus the Nation session of your choice that you attend on Thursday.  I would recommend that you attempt to attend the 10-11am session focused on engineering.  Because we will not have class on Thursday, you can always attend a session that occurs during our regularly scheduled class time if you cannot attend the engineering-specific presentation earlier in the day. [2-3 paragraphs]

2.  Discuss how the information you learn in the session links directly to your specific field of engineering study.  If you cannot determine any connection between the session you attend and your field, perform some online research about your field and the issue of global warming/climate change in order to gather enough relevant information to address this section of the quiz. [2-3 paragraphs]

3.  Review chapter 5 in our textbook regarding ethics and consider your own perspective on the three ethical systems discussed.  Explain your personal values with regards to these three ethical systems. Discuss links between each system relative to your perspective.  Relate your personal ethical code to your specific field of engineering study. [2-3 paragraphs]

Note: Consider the rhetorical situation as you complete this assignment.  Ensure that your document reads clearly, concisely, and compellingly.  Attend to your grammar, apply the "paramedic method," and transition effectively between paragraphs and sections.
