To students in English 431Advanced ShakespeareWinter 1999
The schedule Ive attached is tentative. Before I firm it up and fill in details I need to get some feedback from you.
The first question concerns the selection of plays. Despite the fact that most of you are probably familiar with it, well study Romeo and Juliet because its being performed live at Cal Poly in late February and because its so central to the film Shakespeare in Love which is now in town. Other than that, Id like to avoid going over plays that many of you have already studied in college, especially if thats been in my classes. On the other hand I do want to treat works that are central to the Shakespearean canon and that cover a variety of genres.

The second question concerns a tentative plan to go as a class to Cal Polys magnificent facility at Swanton ranch in the Santa Cruz mountains for a three day excursion on the weekend of March 5-7, the last before dead week. The property includes 3500 acres of ocean beaches, redwood forest, organic vegetable farm and goat and sheep pastures, as well as a miniature railway-- appropriate settings for scenes in The Winters Tale, Macbeth and A Midsummernights Dream that we would perform and record on videotape after a quarters worth of studying other film versions. Theres also a comfortable bunkhouse and dining hall. The excursion would take place in lieu of classes during dead week and the scheduled final exam. The cost would be nominal.
