SHAKESPEARE AT SWANTON RANCH

A residential course

at Cal Poly's magnificent 3200 acre facility in the Santa Cruz Mountains,

where the Redwoods meet the ocean

 

Wednesday July 5 to Friday July 21 (Weekends off)

Taught by Professor Steven Marx

4 units GE C3 credit Satisfies GWR

Can also be taken for credit as English 431--Advanced Shakespeare

 

PROGRAM

This class will study two comedies and a tragicomedy: Love's Labor's Lost, As You Like It, and Cymbeline

*We will read the texts aloud and discuss them in the appropriate natural settings.

*We will view filmed versions and live productions by a first rate theatrical company at the UCSC campus a few miles away.

*We will perform and videotape a short version of As You Like It, a pastoral romance featuring wrestling, stag hunting, gender bending courtship, and cuddly farm animals.

*We will write analytical papers, performance reviews and personal reflections.

LOCATION

*Accommodations include two large yurts serving as dormitories, a newly renovated ranch house serving as classroom, common space and kitchen and a computer lab.

*Ranch facilities include splendid hiking trails in redwood canyons, historic structures, open pastures overlooking the ocean, a working organic vegetable farm and livestock operation, a three mile stretch of historic small guage railroad, miles of sandcliffs and beaches.

*Students will purchase their own food from nearby markets and farms and will cook communally.

*Students will provide their own transportation to the ranch, located off Highway 1 12 miles north of Santa Cruz

COST

Lodging is free of charge. In addition to normal registration fee, additional costs will be for tickets to performances of three plays at Shakespeare Santa Cruz.

HOLDING A PLACE

This class will hold no more than 20 students. To reserve a place you must put down a deposit of $50 to purchase theatre tickets. A waiting list will be kept in case anyone who has reserved a place backs out. ________________________________________________________________________
