Students read three plays. In addition to assigned critical essays, each student prepares for the writing of a research paper on a historical topic by duplicating and presenting an archive of sample research materials they have discovered.

Each student reports on a scene from one film version of the play. The report contains film clips which are analyzed with techniques modelled by the instructor's early lectures and by the assigned film critiques.

During the last three weeks, while students write their research papers, class time [and more] is devoted to rehearsals of a full production of a complete play directed by the instructor which is presented to the public during a three night run at the end of the quarter.

Twelfth night

Macbeth

The last two of these "English 510 Players" productions were chosen partly because no film alternative could be found for comparison to the BBC version.

The Winters Tale

Measure for Measure

Though the production is amateur and the filming is crude, generations of students have enjoyed and interpreted videotaped versions of these student performances.
